Tampa Bay Lightning re-sign Eric Brewer to Four-Year Contract worth nearly $16 Million –NHL Update
Tampa Bay Lightning was busy with a little re-signing of its own during the first round of the 2011 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft, as it reserved veteran defenseman, Eric Brewer, by signing him to a four-year contract worth nearly $16 million,
on Friday.
The move was announced by Tampa Bay's vice president and general manager, Steve Yzerman, early Friday in Florida.
"We are very pleased to get Eric re-signed", Tampa Bay general manager Steve Yzerman said in a statement during a press conference with reporters. "He was an important part of our team after being acquired and he played a key role in the playoffs both on
and off the ice".
Tampa Bay certainly has some of the best defensive and offensive players in the league that can at any time spring up and lead their team deep into the playoffs.
The league was a witness during the previous playoffs as the Lightning struck down hard and reached the Eastern Conference Finals but lost to the Boston Bruins in a close seven game series.
Eric Brewer, who was the fifth overall pick in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Islanders, could not have been happier at his clubs decision to keep him.
Looking at the current situation of sudden trades like that of the Philadelphia Flyers, players have to be ready to move at any moment.
“I’m happy to be a part of the Lightning going forward”, Brewer said after the announcement. “The organization is clearly moving in the right direction and I’m proud to be a part of it”.
The Vernon, British Columbia, Canada, native played his first season with Tampa Bay Lightning after being traded from St. Louis Blues for defenseman Brock Beukeboom and a third-round draft choice in 2011, a franchise he spent six seasons with.
Brewer played only 22 games with the Tampa Bay Lightning in which he put up two points, one goal and one assist.
He really shined in the postseason with the club as he recorded seven points in 18 playoff games which consisted of six assists and a single goal.
