Tampa Bay Lightning thrash the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-2 – NHL Recap
The Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-2 at the Air Canada Centre on Monday. The game was important for both teams, as the Lighting were looking to score important points as they have dropped down the National Hockey League standings
and the Maple Leafs are in the hunt for a play-off spot.
Both teams started off decently, but with the passage of time, the away side came up with some strong attacks which saw them scoring and leading at the end the first period. The second period saw both teams coming out strong on the offence. There were quite
a few goals during the second period, as the Lightning lead 4-2. The Lightning further strengthened their lead with two more goals to win the game 6-2 in the end. Mattias Ritola was named the Star of the Game, as he scored twice during the course of the game.
Both teams made a decent start to the game which saw them coming up with a few shots on goal. However, the shots dried up from the Maple Leafs with the passage of time, but the Lightning continued with their strong offence.
The passing and shooting of both teams was brilliant during the game, but it was the Lightning who managed to score in the 10th minute through Nate Thompson from a well placed flick-shot to get into the lead. There were a few more shots on goal,
as the period progressed but no further goals were scored.
The period ended with the Lightning leading 1-0. During the period, the Maple Leafs made 7 shots on goal, as the Lightning managed 13.
The second period saw the Maple Leafs started high on confidence and they managed to capitalise from this and score in the 6th minute through Dion Phaneuf from a decent strike to level the scores. However, the Lightning scored two goals in quick
succession in the 10th and 13th minutes to open up a two goal advantage with both goals scored by Mattias Ritola.
The Maple Leafs scored in the 15th minute through Nikolao Kulemin from a well placed flick-shot, but the Lightning were able to score once again through Vincent Lecavalier to regain the advantage. The period ended with the Lightning leading 4-2.
During the period, the Lightning made 10 shots on goal, as the Maple Leafs made 12.
The final 20 minutes of play saw both teams pretty much even when it came to shots on goal. However, it was Lightning who scored through Dominic Moore in the 9th minute and then through Mike Lundin in the 15th minute to seal the game.
In the end, the Lightning won the game 6-2 with both teams making 13 shots on goal.
