Tampa Bay Lightning wins 2-0 against Chicago Blackhawks as Mike Smith grabs a shutout
Chicago Blackhawks hosted Tampa Bay Lightning at the United Center this past Sunday. The game was important for both teams as Lightning was looking to move up the standing while Hawks was looking to win and maintain its final playoff spot in the Western
Conference with Flames breathing down its neck.
The game started off on the slower side for both teams and there were very few shots on goal. With the passage of time things got better and Lightning managed to bag the first period’s lone goal to get a lead.
The second period saw Hawks getting better and firing shots on goal but Lightning was restricted to a few shots on goal.
There were no goals in the second period and the final period followed on the same roads with Lightning scoring the lone goal of the period to win the game 2-0 in the end.
Mike Smith, goalkeeper of Lightning, was named the star of the game as he made 31 saves during the course of the game.
Blackhawks were the first to come up with a shot on goal and they continued to do so for a couple of minutes.
Lightning, on the other hand, was in no hurry to score or go on the offence as they waited for chances to come their way.
Lightning’s patience paid off as it scored the opening goal of the period in the eighth minute through Vincent Lecavalier from a brilliant tip-in shot.
Hawks came up with quite a few shots on goal but it was unable to score.
The period ended with Lightning leading 1-0 as it made four shots on goal while Hawks made seven.
The second period started off with Hawks dominating the play once again as it came up with couple of shots on goal with Lightning notching up a few shots in between. However, both teams shared the common problem of not nearing the goal and being unable to
score.
The 20 minutes of play ended without any goals and Lightning still leading by 1-0. During the period, Lightning made four shots on goal while Hawks made 11.
The final period saw the game following the same pattern with Hawks dominating the game in terms of shots on goal. There were several chances for both teams to score a goal but they couldn’t.
The game progressed with the attacks getting better and it was Lightning who sealed the game with a last minute goal scored by Nate Thompson from a decent strike.
During the period, Hawks made 13 shots on goal while Lightning made seven as it won the game, 2-0.
