Tampa Bay Rays' Matt Moore looking to fulfill expectations – MLB News
Matt Moore is one of the most promising players in Tampa Bay Rays right now. According to Baseball America, he is the second best prospect in Rays for 2011. The left handed pitcher was called up in September 2011 to make his second Major League Baseball start in a game against Texas Rangers. He did not disappoint his coaches and the fans as he pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and striking out six batters.
He is extremely confident and he is always looking for ways to learn new tricks. In addition to his throwing skills, Matt has a very inspiring personality. He is a very down to earth person and he is always looking to work with the coaches to improve his game play. The way he has moved up the ladder is quite astonishing but what’s most impressive about Matt is his ability to handle the fame and pressure.
"That's something that's special about him," said veteran starter James Shields, whose own work ethic is considered the gold standard. "A lot of guys you have to come in here and really show work ethic and show routines and really show what the big-league level is all about. With him, you really don't. He just goes about his business, he has a great work ethic, he has a nice little routine."
"He's doing all the right stuff right now," starter David Price added. "And that's good to see."
Matt considers himself extremely lucky in his rapid rise to prominence. A year ago, he was unknown to most of the Rays’ fans. However, his one performance at closing stages of 2011 season worked wonders for him. He was promoted to the big league late in 2011 and the way he conducted himself on the field allowed him to assert his dominance.
Having signed a five year $14 million contract with the Rays during the offseason, he will be looking to make the most of available opportunities. If he can live up to the expectations, Matt will make himself eligible for an eight year $40 million contract. It will be interesting to see if he can maintain his excellent form in the upcoming season.
