Tampa Bay Rays’ David Price suffers an odd injury – MLB Spring Training News
According to a leading sports website, Tampa Bay Rays’ thrower David Price is recovering from the Neck spasm he picked up during one of the Spring Training session games. Price could have cleaned up in the race for oddest injury of the year after toweling himself off too forcefully. The 26-year-old was forced to leave the mound after he struggled to continue pitching.
A source confirmed the injury on Thursday. After pitching two scoreless innings in a game against Detroit Tigers, Price went to the dugout to dry his head. However, he had to stay there after he suffered from an unusual injury. Price pitched with great control and accuracy over the two innings to keep his side in the contest but once he left the mound, the Rays’ failed to cope with the Tigers’ strong batting lineup.
"I felt all right," Price said of his outing. "That's the best I've felt all spring training, body-wise, arm-wise. I didn't feel any soreness, any stiffness anywhere, so that was good."
“There's a little pop, and it just spasms up and gets a little tight,” he added.
In a post game interview, Price stated that this has happened to him twice before in his Major League Baseball career, in September 2011 and spring last season. It seemed the towel caught the back of his head, which pulled his neck forward. Price tried to be cautious but he could not avoid the injury.
Rays’ manager Joe Maddon looked very concerned about Price’s injury and he also had some suggestions for the starter.
"Get in there, towel him down, get in his face, the shroud of David, that kind of thing. Let's stop having him towel himself down. We have plenty of people that can do that here," Maddon told the training staff.
Price had one of the finest seasons of his career in 2010 when he finished second in the American Leaguer with 19 wins. With an incredible 2.72 ERA during that season, he looked on top of his game play. He is key member of Tampa Bay Rays’ squad and it will be interesting to see if he can live up to the expectations during the regular season.
