Tampa Bay Rays’ David Price wins AL Outstanding Pitcher Award – MLB Update
Without a shadow of a doubt, David Price is one of the best starting pitchers in the American League. In his tenure with the Tampa Bay Rays, Price has posted some impressive numbers. However, his performances in the last season will be remembered for a long
time.
For the second time in just three years, Price claimed the American League Most Outstanding pitcher Award. The announcement was made on the Major League Baseball Network during the Players Choice Awards last on Monday.
Price, who was players’ favourite in 2010 as well, had an excellent time on the mound in 2012 as he went 20-5 with an incredible 2.56. His 20 wins were tied for the most wins in the American League. Jered Weaver of the Los Angeles Angels was the other pitcher
to win 20 games in the past season.
"It's definitely very cool," Price said in an interview with a leading sports website. "To be able to gain their respect, I think is very special."
"It feels good to have the opposing players, your teammates, opposing coaches, guys you're batting against every five days, to gain the respect of those guys to get their vote for the most valuable pitcher of the year," Price said on MLB Network after being
announced as the winner. "It's very special to me. It's very special to the Rays and it's something I cherish every time I can win this award."
Price was chosen over Weaver and Chris Sale of the Chicago White Sox. Surprisingly, Detroit Tigers’ starter Justin Verlander, who has helped the Tigers win the AL Central title twice in a row, was not among the top three vote getters for AL Outstanding Pitcher
Award. Verlander took a beating against the San Francisco Giants in Game 1 of World Series finals. Perhaps, his poor outing against the Giants forced the players to vote against him.
However, the biggest prize in baseball is the Cy Young Award. The finalists for the Cy Young Award are expected to be announced at 6pm on Wednesday evening. The winner will be announced at the same time on November 14. Members of the Baseball Writers’ Association
of America vote to choose the Cy Young winner.
