Tampa Bay Rays beat Boston Red Sox 6-2 – MLB News
Tampa Bay Rays secured a noticeable 6-2 win against the in-form Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Wednesday, June 19 in the finale of their three match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball regular season.
With their win, the Rays also managed to avoid an embarrassing series sweep against their American League East Division rivals. Red Sox secured a comfortable 5-1 win in the opener and they continued their good work in Game 2 to
take a decisive 2-0 series lead. With momentum on their side, they had an excellent chance to wrap up a memorable series sweep but the Rays had other ideas.
Showing inspiring determination and fighting spirits, the Rays handled their nerves brilliantly on Wednesday evening to improve their record to 37-35. Starting pitcher Jeremy Hellickson produced his best performance of the season
so far as he allowed just seven hits and two runs in six solid innings for his fifth win. The right hander used his fastballs and sliders superbly against a very strong batting lineup.
Relief pitcher Jake McGee, Joel Peralta, Jamey Wright and Fernando Rodney also made their presence felt as they combined to pitch three perfect inning to help their side hold on to a slim four-run lead.
"There's some new guys within the group and they need to feel it also here," Maddon said. "We have to beat these guys. You've got to beat the people in front of you in the division, obviously."
"We have to get back even with these guys, or close to even," Maddon said. "They've had their way with us."
"I was talking about that I think in the entire camp," he said. "I just thought he ran better than I had been told, he threw better than I had been told, he was a better defender. He's a big, good athlete is what he is.
Red Sox’s starter Ryan Dempster also had a decent time on the mound as he conceded just three runs in six innings but ended up taking his eighth loss of the season.
Desmond Jennings smacked a solo home run to left in the first inning that set the tone for the remaining contest.
