Tampa Bay Rays beat New York Yankees 8-3 – MLB news
Tampa Bay Rays executed their game plan to perfection as they secured a thumping 8-3 win against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Thursday, June 20 in the opening game of their four match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball
regular season.
Rays used their resources perfectly in a game that turned out to be completely one sided. Yankees had the home conditions working in their favour but they were unable to make the most of available opportunities and paid the ultimate price.
Rays’ starting pitcher Matt Moore played a big part in deciding the outcome of the clash as he allowed just four hits and three runs in just over six innings to grab his ninth win of the season. It will be interesting to see if he can continue his stunning
form throughout the season to give his side a decent chance of making it to the playoffs.
“For me it's another frustrating night,” Pettitte said. “We come back and score three runs and I go out there and give them right back. Joe (Girardi) trusts me to get out of the inning and I can't get Rodriguez out. I need to be able to shut these guys down.”
“Things were going well until the sixth inning,” Moore said. “That was kind of the makey or breaky type of moment where it's either going to be a five-run inning with Robby Cano up, bases loaded, no outs. Or you could keep the team in the game the way we
were able to.”
For the Yankees, starter Andy Pettitte had a very ordinary time on the mound as he gave up nine hits and five runs in six plus innings to take his fifth loss of the year. Relief pitchers Joba Chamberlain and Boone Logan also struggled to control his fastball
and sliders as they combined to concede four hits and three runs in just over an inning of relief.
Robinson Cano hit a sacrifice fly to centre in the sixth and Travis Hafner grounded out to shortstop to reduce the deficit to 3-4 but the night belonged to the Rays who held their nerves to prevail.
