Tampa Bay Rays beaten by New York Yankees 4-6 – MLB Update
Tampa Bay Rays were outclassed by the New York Yankees 4-6 at Yankee Stadium in New York on Sunday, September 16 in the finale of their three match series.
It was another superb effort from Joe Girardi and company, who reclaimed their Number one status in the American League East Division standings table on Sunday. Yankees’ ability to win crunch games is what makes them a dangerous side. Surely, they will be
looking to take their winning momentum into the playoffs to reach the World Series finals.
"The baseball gods have created two wild cards, so let's see what happens," manager Joe Maddon said.
Rays, on the other hand, will be disgusted with their performance in a must win situation. The loss sent them to third place on the standings, five games behind the leaders New York Yankees. Manager Joe Maddon will be expecting his team to regroup and fight
back to stay in the playoffs race.
Starting pitcher Matt Moore pitched three ineffective innings, allowing five runs and three hits to take his 11th loss of the season. Moore was unable to control his fastballs and sliders and paid the ultimate price. Relief pitchers Brandon Gomes,
Cesar Ramos and Wade Davis were also unable to control the flow of runs, helping Yankees take an impassable 6-1 lead.
"We have a day off. Guys are going to rest tomorrow," manager Joe Girardi said. "It's their last one of the year and they'd better rest because we still have a grind left."
"In a situation right there, I felt like it needed to be done," Nick Swisher said. "I tried to lay it down right there, and the next thing you know, Rod comes up there -- ribbie."
After New York took the early lead, Ben Zobrist connected for a solo home-run to right centre in the fourth inning to put Rays on the board. Evan Longoria also played a useful hand, earning an RBI single to left in the sixth inning to reduce the deficit
to 3-6. Matt Joyce grounded into a double play to keep Rays’ hopes alive but the Yankees were too hot to handle at their home ballpark.
