Tampa Bay Rays come from behind to defeat New York Yankees 3-2 – MLB Update
The American League’s Tampa Bay Rays came from behind to down the New York Yankees 3-2 in the second game of the four-game series at the Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg on Tuesday, July 19 to tie the series 1-all.
The Yankees’ scored two leading runs in the third inning and their starter Bartolo Colon held the Rays’ scoreless in his first four innings. The Rays touched their first run in the bottom of the fifth inning and then added two more runs in the bottom of
the seventh to cement their 3-2 win. Getting this win, they took revenge of last night’s 5-4 defeat.
Last night, the Rays’ presented the same kind of form but a few wobbly pitches in the last two innings pushed them into a defeat in the series-opener.
"We've played the same game three nights in a row. We happened to win this one," Tampa Bay’s manager Joe Maddon said. "Obviously, people are upset about the previous two and very happy tonight."
Jeremy Hellickson allowed two runs on five hits, walked one and struck-out seven batters to snatch his ninth win of the season. Taking this win, he improved his record to 9-7 with 3.17 ERA in 17 games. Jake McGee yielded one hit while closer Joel Peralta
tossed a scoreless ninth to confirm the 51st win for the Rays.
Permitting three runs in the middle of the game cost Colon his sixth loss that dropped him to 6-6 with 3.43 ERA. He struck-out nine batters but it went to waste because of some loose pitches.
"It's an unfortunate way to lose a ballgame," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said. "We kind of gave them the game. You're going to have physical errors and you're going to lose ballgames, obviously.”
Colon was not pleased of his wobbly pitches but he did not express his anger in front of the media. Boone Logan tossed 12 strikes off 13 pitches and Cory Wade remained scoreless in his single inning spell.
It was the Yankees’ 38th loss of the season while they are among the chart leaders with their 56 wins of the season. The Yankees have scheduled Freddy Garcia to toss the next game while the Rays’ have employed their strong starter David Price.
The contest will be great to see, but according to experts, the Yankees will make their perfect to grab back the lead.
Tampa Bay put in a tremendous effort as they fought back and managed to restrict the Yankees’ offence. New York will be looking to improve their performance for their next match-up. It will be interesting to see how Tampa Bay carried their winning momentum
forward.
