Tampa Bay Rays defeat Boston Red Sox 16-5 – MLB Update
The Tampa Bay Rays put in a brilliant performance as they comprehensively defeated the Boston Red Sox 16-5 at Fenway Park, Boston on Monday, April 11.
The game began with Daisuke Matsuzaka pitching for Boston. It was Johnny Damon who took him on and homered to right to open the account of Tampa Bay. With the end of Boston’s first inning in which Jeremy Hellickson came out to pitch for Tampa Bay with a
lead of 1-0.
It was John Jaso who struck Daisuke Matsuzaka first, as he doubled to deep left-centre and Ben Zobrist and B. J. Upton scored, as Lopez went to third. Reid Brignac followed, as he singled to right where Lopez and Jaso scored. Sam Fuld did the real damage,
as he charged Matsuzaka for a two-run homer and three runs. That gave Tampa Bay a sufficient 7-0 lead.
Adrian Gonzalez scored Boston’s first run when he struck Jeremy Hellickson who came to pitch in the fourth inning for Tampa Bay. Gonzalez tripled to deep right where Dustin Pedroia scored. Tampa Bay’s Johnny Damon took on Tim Wakefield who was pitching for
Boston. He singled to center where Fuld scored, giving Tampa Bay an 8-1 lead in the fourth inning. J.D Drew tried to reduce the lead by scoring another run, as he singled to centre where David Ortiz scored, bringing Tampa Bay’s lead to 8-2.
Jaso scored the 9th run for Tampa Bay in the fifth inning when Wakefield got two hits. Jaso doubled to left where Upton scored. Boston faced a shut-out inning when Hellickson did not allow them to go for any major hit. In their sixth inning, Tampa
Bay once again took Wakefield to task, punishing him severely with three runs. Matt Joyce scored a double which was followed by Zobrist. With three hits, these three runs piled up a score that the Red Sox could hardly fathom.
Fuld of Tampa Bay did it in the 9th inning, as he doubled to left where Casey Kotchman and Brignac scored a double. Four runs in this inning led to a 16-4 lead for Tampa Bay which was literally impossible to outdo. David Ortiz tried his best in
the 9th inning to take on Kyle Farnsworth, but to no avail.
It will be interesting to see how Tampa Bay carries their momentum into the next series. The Red Sox were unable to get their offence going and found it difficult to contain the Rays’ power hitting. They did manage to put up a little fight, but it was not
enough to get a victory against the massive total that Tampa Bay had put on the board.
