Tampa Bay Rays defeat Toronto Blue Jays 9-1 – MLB Update
Tampa Bay Rays’ offence shone on Wednesday, August 3 to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 9-1 at Tropicana Field.
Having lost the first game 3-1, the Tampa Bay’s offence remained unyielding at to secure the emphatic win.
However, the team manager Joe Maddon struck a careful note whereby he did not show extravagant enthusiasm over the win. For him, the team has to improve further if it wants to remain the victorious side in the upcoming games.
"We've got to get this one thing turned around and that's to play better offensively here while maintaining the rest of our game," Maddon said of the Rays, who entered 29th overall in runs scored at home. "Then we can make some noise."
For the Blue Jays’ manager, the loss demanded immediate introspection for the team was being tipped to be far better than the Rays.
"I think it's showing us that we've got take a closer look and discuss what our next steps are," Farrell said. "It's not to say that he's coming out of the rotation by any means, but we're well aware of late the lack of late action through the zone and that's
a sign of fatigue."
James Shields threw two strong innings to provide a better defensive start to the Rays. Entering into the second inning, Ben Zobrist had the first homer of the game, giving the Rays a 1-0 lead which was doubled by Sean Rodriguez with his sacrifice fly hit.
Robinson Chirinos and Johnny Damon scored a single each in the 5-hit four-run second inning of Carlos Villanueva who struggled to contain the seemingly elusive Tampa Bay Rays offence. J. P. Arencibia scored a single in the third to bring the lead down to
3-1 for the Jays.
Nonetheless, the third inning once again saw a far ruthless Rays’ offence as hitter after hitter took Villanueva to task and scored runs to take up the lead for the team. Casey Kotchman was the first to score a single in the third to make it 5-1 for the
Rays.
Robinson Chirinos hit a three-run homer to take the lead to 8-1 for the Rays’ offence as Villanueva continued to strain, failing to contain Tampa Bay’s hitters. The disastrous two innings prompted the change of the Blue Jays starter, but that was probably
too late.
James Shields continued to pitch strong innings right into the seventh to maintain the lead, while Matt Joyce scored to single to make it 9-1 for the Rays. James Shields pitched a shut-out eighth and the closer Jake McGee a shut-out ninth to easily win 9-1
victory for the Tampa Bay Rays.
