Tampa Bay Rays extend likely qualifying offer to B.J. Upton – MLB Update
Tampa Bay Rays finally decided to offer a qualifying bid to their seven-year veteran B. J. Upton as the countdown ends on Saturday for free agents to negotiate with their future contracts.
"You can't assume anything; the goal when you get to free agency is to see what the market tells you, We would hope there's something strong. We have to wait and see what happens in the next week,'' Upton's agent, Larry Reynolds said in detail about the developing story regarding Upton.
Sources speculate that he will likely get $13.3 million offer under new collective bargaining rules laid by the Major League authorities which is a good offer by all means.
Earlier a sports reporter Jon Heyman has also said, “The Braves will make a qualifying offer Friday to Michael Bourn, and the Rays will make one to B.J. Upton, as well. But the top two free-agent center fielders on the market will turn those offers down and are more likely to sign long free-agent deals elsewhere … Baseball officials still see the Nationals as the favorites for Bourn.”
Earlier it was expected that he might not get any offer from the Rays and could sign with another team in the league after becoming free agent but both sides negotiated well and now it will benefit both sides to start another season together.
Upton showed good consistent performance in 2012 Major League Baseball season. He finished with .246 hitting average along with 28 homers, 78 RBIs and .298 OBP.
Experts say this is a healthy sign for the Rays’ that they will again come up with some of the talented players including Upton in the next MLB outing.
Upton's seven-year Major League experienced knows his worth in the league as well. His career .255 hitting average along with 118 homers, 447 RBIs and .336 OBP is also a very good aspect of his extraordinary talent.
His presence will work both ways. Not only he will improve as a player with few more years in the Rays but the team will get benefit from his potentials and his hard hitting skills.
