Tampa Bay Rays kept sliding, lose to New York Yankees 1-4 – MLB Update
Tampa Bay Rays continued to slide down as they took their second straight loss 1-4 against New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Wednesday, June 6 in second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League
Baseball regular season.
Yankees’ starting pitcher Ivan Nova may have had a forgettable time in his previous start against Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim but considering the way he pitched against the Rays it seems he has figured out the weaker links in
his pitching.
"Tonight was a really, really good day for me," Nova said.
"He was just dialed in tonight," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.
"Especially when everybody's pitching good, I don't want to be the guy behind," Nova further added. "I want to be with those guys pitching good."
In a display of top quality throwing, Nova took a two hitter in the ninth inning, helping the Yankees take a decisive 2-0 lead in the series. Robinson Cano and Mark Teixeira also had a great time on the plate as they both homered
to let New York take a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning.
Nick Swisher doubled to deep right in the eighth to extend Yankees’ lead to 3-0. Eric Chavez also had an RBI double to end the game on a strong note for the Yankees.
However, all the credit goes to Nova who pitched deep into the ninth inning for the first time in his big league’s career. Desmond Jennings and B.J. Upton combined to score the only run of the game for Tampa Bay.
"A better game played on our part, even if we didn't win," Maddon said. "I thought we played better, we pitched better, we just did not hit."
"He just had his stuff today. He just had it," Upton said in a post game interview. "Cobb threw a good game, too."
With their win on Wednesday evening, New York has now moved to second position on the league table and it will be interesting to see if they can take the first place before the All Star Break.
