Tampa Bay Rays lose to Baltimore Orioles 2-3 – MLB Update
Tampa Bay Rays were beaten by the Baltimore Orioles 2-3 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on Wednesday, September 12 in the second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Rays’ starting pitcher Alex Cobb put up a decent show as he gave up seven hits and two runs in just over four innings. Striking-out six batters, he kept the Rays in the game.
Relief pitchers Jake McGee, Wade Davis and Joel Peralta combined to pitch three plus scoreless innings as the match entered a very exciting phase.
However, closer Kyle Farnsworth gave up the tie breaking single in the bottom of the ninth to let Orioles take an impassable 2-0 series lead. It was Farnsworth’s fifth loss of the season and it will be interesting to see if he can put things back on the
right track in his next appearance.
B.J. Upton smacked a solo home-run in the first inning to put Rays on the board. Left fielder Ben Francisco also contributed with a double to deep left centre but the Orioles were unstoppable at their home ballpark.
"His poise and his calmness, he's not taken in by the moment at all," Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said. "That was an example of his calmness right there. He's really aware of everything that's going on around him. For him to do that in that situation is
impressive. He has the maturity of a veteran."
"We have to get some offense somewhere," Maddon said. "Our defense has gotten better. Our pitching is outstanding, The offense kind of comes and goes. That's the bad part. Our inability to get the hit when we need it."
After suffering an embarrassing defeat in the series opener, Joe Maddon and company put up a solid fight in Game 2. However, despite showing great battling skills, the Rays were unable to cross the winning line.
The loss has sent the Rays three games behind Baltimore at the top of American League East Division standings and it will be interesting to see if Tampa Bay can regroup to avoid another humiliating road series sweep.
