Tampa Bay Rays lose to New York Yankees 4-6 – MLB Update
Tampa Bay Rays were beaten by the New York Yankees 4-6 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida on Wednesday, September 5 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Starting pitcher Matt Moore looked completely out of sorts, making a large number of errors in an important game. Overall, he allowed eight hits and six runs in just over six innings to take his ninth loss of the season.
Relief pitchers Kyle Farnsworth, Jake McGee and Wade Davis combined to pitch 2.2 scoreless innings to keep Rays’ hopes alive but a late offensive outburst from Derek Jeter took the Yankees home safely.
Evan Longoria singled to right centre in the first inning to put Rays on the board. Ben Zobrist also made a useful contribution with the bat with a triple to deep centre in the fifth inning but the Rays were outplayed by their rivals in finer details of
the game.
"There's no question ... it's sink or swim time," Rodriguez said. "In order for us to swim, we'll have to swim the right way. We're going to start playing the brand of baseball we started tonight."
"They're good ... they took advantage of our mistakes," Rays’ manager Joe Maddon said. "Two out of three is not bad. I'll take it. Prior to this series, I would have signed up for it. We picked up a game and I think we picked up a lot of confidence, also."
"You have to anticipate, and you have to have good jumps," Girardi said.
Rays edged their opponents 4-3 in the series opener and they continued their excellent work in Game 2 for a 5-2 win. Joe Maddon and company had an excellent chance to complete a memorable series sweep on Wednesday but the Yankees had other ideas.
Showing great fighting abilities and mental toughness, Yankees came out of the slump in an emphatic fashion, avoiding an embarrassing series loss. Rays are still very much in the playoff race. Surely, they will be looking to learn from their mistakes to
have a better chance of winning the American League East Division title.
