Tampa Bay Rays outclass Boston Red Sox 4-2 – MLB Update
Tampa Bay Rays continued their impressive winning streak as they edged past the Boston Red Sox 4-2 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Wednesday, September 26 in the finale of their two match series.
Rays’ starting pitcher Alex Cobb grabbed his tenth win of the season after he gave up just three hits and one run in five innings. Striking-out five batters, he created all sorts of problems for Boston’s batting line-up.
Relief pitchers Kyle Farnsworth, Jake McGee, Wade Davis, Joel Peralta and Fernando Rodney combined to give just one run in four sharp innings to help Rays hold on to their two run lead.
Daniel Nava singled to right in the second inning to put his side on the board but the Red Sox were unable to consolidate. Carlos Pena homered to centre in the fifth inning to bring Rays back into the contest. Ben Francisco also smacked a solo home-run to
give Rays a crucial 3-1 lead. Jose Lobaton went 1-for-4 in a game that was played on a very competitive note.
"I want it to be exactly like last year," Maddon said on Wednesday night after the Rays beat Boston 4-2 for their seventh consecutive victory. "It's starting to look a lot like Christmas."http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/_/id/4594/carlos-pena"We'll count 'em later," said Pena who belted a two run home run to centre in the fifth inning. "Right now we're going to enjoy tonight and come back tomorrow."
"(It's) disappointing," Bobby Valentine said in a post game interview. "We didn't walk off many and didn't score enough runs. We've got a lot saved up for next year."
Rays crushed their American League East Division rivals 5-2 in series opener and they continued their good work in the finale to extend their winning streak to seven games.
Despite their incredible winning run, Rays are placed third on the American League East standings table. Right now, their only chance of reaching the playoffs is to grab one of the Wild Card spots. It will be interesting to see if Joe Maddon and company
can win their remaining games to cheer up their fans.
