Tampa Bay Rays outclass Seattle Mariners 4-1 at Safeco Field – MLB Update
Tampa Bay Rays continued their brilliant winning form as they outclassed the Seattle Mariners 4-1 at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington on Monday, August 13 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Desmond Jennings had an RBI single to left in the third to open the scoring. B.J. Upton connected for a two run home-run to left in the third and Ben Zobrist doubled to deep centre to stretch Rays’ lead to 4-0. Upton, who has more than 200 career home-runs,
will be looking to lead his side to World Series title glory this season.
"(He) kind of threw us for a loop the first couple innings," Upton said of Mariners’ starting pitcher Blake Beavan, who gave up four runs and eight hits in six decent innings.
Joe Maddon and his men have definitely raised their game-play after the All Star Break. The entire player bench seems to be more confident than before. Rays’ win on Monday was another demonstration of what they care capable of. Their pitching rotation, in
particular, was brilliant as it troubled most Seattle’s hitters.
It will be interesting to see if Maddon and company can continue their excellent form over the next few weeks to make it through to the playoffs.
Mariners, on the other hand, had no answers to some top quality throwing from Alex Cobb. They will be looking to learn from their mistakes to turn things around in Game 2.
"The pitch to Upton is the only one I'd take back," Beavan said with a disappointed face.
"We were in the ballgame, but we never had that inning," Mariners’ manager Eric Wedge said answering questions from the reporters.
Rays’ starting pitcher Cobb pitched seven valuable innings, allowing just four hits and a run to play a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash. Joel Peralta and Fernando combined to pitched two scoreless innings of relief to help Tampa Bay prevail
in the series opener.
Tampa Bay will definitely feel good about this victory as they managed to dominate the Mariners and get their offence to spark. Seattle will be looking to put in a better performance in Game 2 as they battle it out with the Rays.http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/_/id/28905/sam-fuld
