Tampa Bay Rays receive 2-11 hammering against New York Mets - MLB Update
Tampa Bay Rays received a 2-11 hammering at the hands of New York Mets at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida on Tuesday, June 12 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
In a game that proved to completely one sided, the Mets took complete advantage of their opponents’ unforced errors on the field, scoring runs at regular intervals. Making the most of opportunities, New York scored six runs in the seventh inning, which dented
Rays’ confidence levels.
"Anytime you contribute to a team win, that's what it's about. Regardless of who gets the win, for me just to be part of a win is the most important thing," Young said. "The credit goes to all the guys tonight, the lineup. ... Top to bottom, we've got a
group of fighters, and it's fun to be part of it."
"It started with Chris holding it together," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "Two fly balls that should have been caught that drop in, and he fights through those and doesn't let them hurt him too bad. It kept us in the game."
David Wright provided the Mets with an absolutely perfect start as he scored on a throwing error by Tampa Bay’s shortstop to put his side 1-0 ahead. Rookie Jordany Valdespin showed what he is capable of as he drove in crucial runs to help his team come back
from behind to take a 4-2 lead.
Daniel Murphy also made a useful contribution with the bat as he singled to centre in the seventh and Ike David put Rays out of the equation completely with a three run home run to right that extended Mets’ lead to an impassable 9-2.
Valdespin grounded out to first in the eighth and Lucas Duda had an RBI single to right in the eighth to end the game on a strong note for the Mets.
Mets’ starting pitcher Chris Young put up a strong show, allowing nine hits on 106 throws in just over five innings. Will Rhymes also had a decent time on the plate as he hit a sacrifice fly to centre.
