Tampa Bay Rays receive 9-1 hammering against New York Mets – MLB Update
Tampa Bay Rays received a 9-1 hammering at the hands of New York Mets at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida on Wednesday, June 13 in the second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
With their second consecutive win against the Rays, the Mets improved their record to 34-29. Making the most of scoring opportunities, New York Mets secured a comfortable 11-2 win in the opening game and it should not be a surprise to anyone if they end
up sweeping the Rays in a three match series.
Mike Nickeas had a decent time on the plate as he singled to centre in the fifth to break the deadlock, putting the Mets 1-0 ahead. Daniel Murphy had an RBI single to right in the fifth to extend Mets’ lead to 3-0 lead.
"We said in the ninth inning that we've got to appeal that play. We're probably not going to win it, but ... what the heck," Mets’ Manager Terry Collins said. "What have you got to lose except to have somebody say no?"
"The streaks and the special things that happen along the way are just the manifestation of that, of wanting to be consistent and wanting to really be good at my craft. I still have a passion for it. I'm still looking for things to do with the knuckleball,”
said Dickey.
Vinny Rottino doubled to right in the sixth to put New York in a commanding position, leading the score 4-0.
Ike Davis also made a valuable contribution with an RBI single to right in the sixth inning. Omar Quintanilla and David Wright displayed some top quality hitting skills in the bottom of the ninth to demoralise the Rays, taking Mets’ lead to 9-0.
Desmond Jennings grounded out to shortstop in the ninth to score the only run for Tampa Bay.
R.A. Dickey created all sorts of problem for Rays’ batters with his effective knuckleballs as he allowed only an infield single during his second career one hitter. With 12 strikeouts, he is first pitcher to win 10 games this season.
