Tampa Bay Rays’ shortstop options looking bright – MLB News
Tampa Bay Rays are looking in great shape ahead of 2012 Spring Training. Although the Rays were unable to live up to the expectation last season, they are looking stronger than ever right now. With a shortstop spot vacant in their lineup, Rays’ manager Joe
Maddon will be looking to make the best possible choice in next few days.
The battle for the shortstop is a tough one. In addition to Sean Rodriguez and Reid Brignac, there are many other shortstops in the camp waiting to pounce on any available opportunity. Hak-Ju Lee is one of the most promising shortstops in Rays squad as he
reported for his first big league season on Saturday. On the other hand, Tim Beckham will also be hoping for a breakthrough. Beckham was the top pick in 2008 draft and he has given considerable results since then.
Beckham has represented Rays for the last four years and while many baseball writers and analysts are convinced that he no longer is the same player, the Rays haven’t let go the 22 year old shortstop.
"Timmy's really put himself back in the picture," manager Joe Maddon said. "Just a natural progression”.
"You hear the same thing from everybody. It's pretty consistent," Maddon said. "He's the full package. It's not just that he does this or that well. Great defense, fine arm, moves the ball, very fast on the bases, so it's going to be exciting to watch this."
With great control and discipline, Beckham hit a decent .271 average last season. It will not be wrong to say that he showed better plate control. His swing technique and defence also looked more improved. The youngster showed a poor defensive technique
in the previous seasons. However, with persistent hard work, he has improved his game play significantly.
"I'm ready, always ready. So, just play hard, work hard, that's it," Lee said.
When asked what he needs to improve upon to be ready for the major leagues, Lee said, "I'm ready now."
Lee also produced match winning performances past season. After being traded to the Rays, the prospect will be looking to put up a solid show to secure a permanent place on Rays’ roster.
