Tampa Bay Rays shutout Detroit Tigers 3-0 – MLB news
Tampa Bay Rays shutout the Detroit Tigers 3-0 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Wednesday, June 5 in Game 2 of their three match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball regular season.
It was huge win for the Rays who were completely outclassed by the Tigers in the opener. A lot of credit should be given to the pitching rotation for executing the game plan to perfection against one of the best batting sides in the American League. It will
be interesting to see if the Rays can continue to play with confidence in the finale to earn a rare series sweep at Comerica Park.
Tigers, on the other hand, will be extremely disappointed with the outcome of the clash. Jim Leyland and company dominated the Rays in almost all aspects of the game in the opener, securing a comfortable 10-1 win. However, despite having the momentum, they
were unable to find winning ways on Wednesday.
“There's probably times you're going to roll the dice and let the pitcher pitch to Cabrera,” Rays’ Manager Joe Maddon said. “Everything depends on the pitcher. It's not a generic moment. There's a lot of different things to be read into that moment -- your
pitcher, how he reacts to left-handed hitters, all that kind of stuff is important.”
“This is definitely a tough loss to swallow, especially to have it happen to Doug for the second game in a row,” Detroit catcher Alex Avila said.
Tigers’ starting pitcher Doug Fister took his fifth loss of the year after he had a horrible time on the mound. Overall, the right hander allowed seven hits and three runs in a low scoring contest. Relief pitcher Drew Smyly pitched 0.2 innings of relief
but his effort was not enough to save the Tigers from an embarrassing defeat.
For the Rays, starter Alex Cobb pitched seven plus scoreless innings while striking out seven batters. However, it was reliever Joel Peralta who walked away with a win.
