Tampa Bay Rays sink Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 to win series – MLB Update
Tampa Bay Rays beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 at Citizens Ball Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Sunday, June 24 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Sean Rodriguez looked very comfortable on the mound as he doubled to deep centre in the second inning to put the Rays on the board. Brooks Conrad produced a powerful performance as he doubled to left in the second and Ben Zobrist scored to extend Tampa Bay’s
lead to 3-0.
Conrad had another RBI double to deep right centre in the sixth that restored Rays’ three run lead. Relief secured his second win of the season, pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings. Wade Davis gave up three runs and three hits in just over two innings.
"He's a very aggressive sort," Rays manager Joe Maddon said of Conrad. "He's also very eager to play, our type of guy."
"When I found out where I was going, I was super excited," Conrad said. "Every guy I talked to said how they loved playing here, and how they loved playing for Joe Maddon."
"I try to treat every start the same, but whenever you're facing somebody who is one of their top guys, it definitely heightens your sense of awareness," said David Price, who gave up four hits in game 1. "You know you can't go six and give up three."
Manager Joe Maddon will be very impressed with his side’s performance in the last two games. The Phillies had the better of their opponents in series opener 7-6 and with home conditions working in their favour, they were the favourites to win the series
but the Rays had other ideas.
The Rays edged their rivals 3-2 in the second game. With the momentum on their side, they dominated the Phillies in the finale to improve their record to 40-32.
Right now, Tamp Bay are placed third on the American League East Division standings, three games behind the leaders New York Yankees and it will not be wrong to say that they have an excellent opportunity to make it to the playoffs this season.
