Tampa Bay Rays win seven in row 4-2 against Miami Marlins – MLB Update
Tampa Bay Rays showed great composure and improvisation as they beat Miami Marlins 4-2 at Marlins Park in Miami, FL on Sunday, June 10 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Joe Maddon and company outclassed their arch rivals in a three match series, dominating all departments of the game. The phone from the dugout started to malfunction in the seventh inning but the bullpen soon had things under control.
In a display of an impressive team work, four of the Rays’ pitchers combined on a seven hitter to humiliate the Marlins in front of their home crowd. B.J. Upton looked in top form on Sunday evening as he doubled to deep left centre in the first inning as
Carlos Pena scored the first run.
Matt Joyce had an excellent time on the plate as he homered to right centre in the fourth inning to double Rays’ advantage to 2-0. Elliot Johnson also joined the party, hitting a home run to right as Tampa Bay took 4-0 lead in the fourth.
"Rhymesy looked like the fastest," Maddon said with a smile on his face. "The pitchers (in the dugout) are so disinterested at that point. They've been eating food the whole game, so they're not really able to run down to the bullpen. Rhymesy was eager.
He had that look in his eye, so I felt good about it."
"Ozzie was playing with Joe, acting like he had yanked the cord out," Rays shortstop Elliot Johnson said. "We had to call a 30-second timeout."
"We've got to play better," Ozzie Guillen said. "We really were pretty flat at the plate all weekend."
Starting pitcher James Shields held on to win for the first time in five starts. Relief pitcher Fernando Rodney pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his 18thsave in 19 chances this season.
The Marlins have now lost seven in a row against the Rays and they have been outscored 43-10 in those seven meetings. It will be interesting to see if they can turn the tables on their rivals in their next series.
