Tan Bin Shen and Gan Teik Chai not happy with the decision of Badminton Association of Malaysia
Malaysia’s young players, Tan Bin Shen and Gan Teik Chai, are not happy with the decision taken by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) regarding the selection of Hoon Thien How and Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif for the World Badminton Championships 2011.
Bin Shen – Teik Chai qualified for the World Championships on merit as they are currently ranked World Number 17. They have been working hard for the last two years as independent shuttlers. Their hard work and dedication earned them the 17th
position in the world rankings conducted by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
However, the news from BAM came as a shock for the pair when they found out their services won't be required for the World Championship. Instead of them, World Number 27, Hoon Thien – Mohd Zakry, will compete in the event.
Teik Chai was very disappointed on the decision of BAM. The player said while speaking to reporters, “I can accept it if there were three BAM pairs in the top 24 and the association decided to make use of its right to name the pairs. But BAM sacrificed our
place in order to give it to a lower ranked pair and, even worse, not their second ranked combination (Fairuzizuan Tazari-Ong Soon Hock) but their third combination.”
He further added that, “If BAM wanted two or even three pairs for the World Championships, they should have set a programme for the players and give them sufficient tournaments to qualify. Don’t take someone else’s place just like that.”
Malaysia’s top seeds, Tan Boon Heong – Koo Kien Keat, who emerged as the runners up of the 2011 All England Open Premier Super series, will be among the major contenders in the mega event. Mohd Zakry – Hoon Thien will join hands with the senior teammates
to bring glory to Malaysia in the Men’s Doubles category.
However, Bin Shen – Teik Chai are left in disappointment by the decision of the governing body. The duo worked hard to qualify for the mega event but in the end, they failed to get a ticket for the World Championship due to, perhaps a wrong decision taken
by BAM.
