Tan Boon Heong and Koo Kien Keat crash out of the 2011 World Championships – Badminton News
Top shuttlers of Malaysia, Tan Boon Heong and Koo Kien Keat crashed out of the 2011 World Championships as they received severe treatment from Korea’s Yoo Yeon Seong and Ko Sung Hyun in the Men’s Doubles quarter-final fight.
The Korean pair continued their supremacy over the World Number Four Malaysian pair by winning the quarter-final battle by playing stunning badminton. Both pairs have met five times and the Malaysians have never defeated the Koreans.
The Koreans ended the quarter-final match in straight games by taking 39 minutes of court time. The Malaysians failed to play their natural game and lost to their opponents with a margin of 17-21 and 13-21.
In the first set, both pairs progressed in the game by playing positive badminton and the score remained close in the first-half. However, after the interval, the Koreans geared up their speed and dominated the rallies by working well at the net. Tan Boon
and Koo Kien were playing under pressure as they could not play their usual strokes and lost the set with the margin of 17-21.
In the following game, the Koreans just crushed the higher ranked shuttlers by playing to their maximum potential. The Malaysians could not event put a good show in this second game and lost it with a big margin of 13-21.
After losing the match, Koo Kien said, “The Koreans just did not allow us room to play our attacking game. They knew every detail of our game and anticipated all our moves at every turn. It was disappointing.”
He further added, “I am clueless as to why this pair always show strong character whenever they play against us. They were quite clever to put pressure on us.”
Tan Boon also expressed his dejection by saying, “It is disappointing to lose in the quarter-finals, especially after having reached the final last year. But we will not let it crush our spirit.”
Now, Tan Boon and Koo Kien intend to work more hard in training sessions to eliminate their weaknesses and polish their skills to become well prepared for the 2012 London Olympics.
