Tan Boon Heong and Koo Kien Keat optimistic for excellent results with new coach, Pang Cheh Chang
Malaysia’s current top seeds and Men’s Doubles World Number Five ranked pair, Tan Boon Heong and Koo Kien Keat are optimistic to get excellent results at international stage by working with their new coach, Pang Cheh Chang.
Tan Boon and Koo Kien have been playing under the patronage of Rexy Mainaky, the double chief coach, for the last five years and have won numerous tournaments by beating top athletes of the world. However, for the last 18 months, the duo failed to secure
good results as they are passing through the worst patch of their professional career.
Their poor performance has forced them to try a new coach as they expect that a new style or strategy of training can boost their confidence and they will be back on the right track. That is the reason why they decided to train with new coach, Cheh Chang,
who has an eight-year experience of working with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).
In the recent event of 2011 BWF World Championships, the Malaysian duo failed to cross the quarter-final stage which made them and the coaches quite desperate. However, Koo Kien also admitted that it was not the fault of their coach, Rexy, as they did not
play well.
Koo Kien said, “Boon Heong and I are not blaming Rexy. It’s obvious that Boon Heong and I are having problems and it resulted in our poor results at the world meet. We hope this decision to part ways with Rexy will not be misconstrued. We are not blaming
him.”
However, he further expressed that they need a change which can put them on the winning track. He added, “Rexy has done his best for us and we enjoyed good times together ... but we need something new now. We need a change. Perhaps another coach can help
us. We have reached a plateau in our game. Boon Heong and I have run out of ideas on how to improve our game.”
Now, Tan Boon and Koo Kien will start their training with Cheh Chang and their major target is to get good results at the 2012 London Olympics.
