Malaysia’s Men’s Doubles national coach, Tan Kim Her is quite happy with the gusty performance of Lim Khim Wah – Goh V Shem, who won their battle against Lee Yong Dae – Shin Baek Cheol of South Korea and helped their team secure top position in Group D at Thomas Cup Preliminary Round, on Wednesday, February 15 in Macau.
Malaysia won their team-event match against South Korea with a 3-2 margin and will meet India today in the quarter-final. No one was expecting Khim Wah and V Shem to display such smashing form and win against thier Korean opponents who were far stronger on paper.
Kim Her was satisfied with the impressive performance of the pair which helped Malaysia to finish at the top in Group D and find an easy fight against India at the quarter-final stage.
The coach said, “I am happy that Khim Wah-V Shem also played a fantastic match to upset the Koreans. They did not give up despite losing the opening game but continued to pressure the Koreans. Their performances augurs well for the future.”
The sensational performance of Khim Wah and V Shem proved that they are in prime form and can beat anyone who they find on the opposite side of the net.
It was a thrilling fight in which Malaysian shuttlers put up superb show of top quality badminton and thrashed the Koreans in a thrilling rubber-set fight.
In the opening game, Khim Wah and V Shem played well but failed to remain positive in the concluding phase and lost the set with a margin of 18-21.
However, in the following set, they showed aggression and managed to win the game with a 21-19 score on the board.
In the deciding game, Khim Wah and V Shem did not spare even a single chance to their opponents to dominate the game and won it with a stunning margin of 21-11. The overall score of this fabulous fight was 18-21, 21-19 and 21-11.
Malaysia will take on India today in the quarter-final clash and Kim Her wants shuttlers to play at their best without considering that they are facing a lower ranked team.
He said, “India may be ranked lower than us but I will instruct all players to treat them cautiously. We do not want to take anyone for granted.”
Malaysia stands a strong chance to qualify for the Thomas Cup Finals by reaching in the semi-final of the qualifying round.
