Tan Kim Her to experiment Yew Hong Kheng and Mak Hee Chun in the Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold
Malaysia’s Men’s Doubles coach for back-up shuttlers, Tan Kim Her, has formed a new pair of Yew Hong Kheng and Mak Hee Chun, to compete in the Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold 2011. The tournament is set to begin in Bangkok, from June 7.
Kim Her is going to field the new pair of Yew Hong and Mak Hee in the qualifying round of the Thailand Open. The formation of the new duo came after some key shuttlers under the charge of Kim Her in the Men’s Doubles category suffered from severe injuries
and were forced to stop playing competitive badminton.
Among the injured shuttlers are Chooi Kah Ming and Teo Kok Siang, who will stay away from the badminton arena for at least a period of six months. Teo Kok underwent a knee surgery this February, whereas, Chooi Kah hurt his knee in a training session last
week which resulted in him undergoing surgery.
Both injured shuttlers have left their partners alone for the next six months. They have been performing well with their colleagues, but the injuries have disturbed their plans. The coach, Kim Her, decided to try the new pair to find out whether he can find
a solid duo in the Thailand Open.
Kim Her said, “It is not easy to find a partnership that can go far. I have to look into a lot of aspects. I need some time to assess whether these players can form solid partnerships.”
He further added, “My target is to prepare reliable pairs for the Asian and Commonwealth Games in 2014. Hopefully, I will not have to make any more changes after this.”
In the opening match of the qualifying round in the Thailand Open, Yew Hong and Mak Hee will be up against Sittichai Viboonsin and Nipitphon Puangpuapech of Thailand. If things proceed according to plan, the Malaysians will next fight the fourth seeded pair,
Hendra Gunawan and Alven Yulianto of Indonesia.
The coach will observe and evaluate the performance of the newly formed pair in this event, to make further plans for the 2012 London Olympics.
