Tan Wee Kiong and Ow Yao Han send Olympic Champions packing in second round: Indonesia Open GP Gold
Indonesia’s qualifiers, Tan Wee Kiong and Ow Yao Han ended the hopes of local favourites and reigning Olympic Champions, Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan in the Men’s Doubles second round of the Indonesia Open GP Gold on Thursday, September 29.
The event is taking place at Gor Bulutangkis Palaran Samarinda, East Kalimantan, Indonesia.
Wee Kiong and Yao Han proved their worth by playing impressive badminton against the World Number Seven pair of Kido and Setiawan. The duo finished the encounter in straight sets by taking a surprisingly short time of 27 minutes.
The Malaysians made their mark over the Indonesians in a remarkable way as they played flawless badminton against the experienced shuttlers. Kido and Setiawan failed to cheer the home crowd as they played an unexpectedly negative game throughout the match.
Men’s Doubles head coach, Tan Kim Her was excited with the news that the young Malaysians have delivered a tremendous performance against the great shuttlers from Indonesia.
Kim Her said, “I got off the phone with Rosman (Razak) and he told me that Yao Han-Wee Kiong played exceptionally well and controlled the entire match. I’m also impressed with Yao Han as he is the one player in the doubles squad who has improved the most.”
He further added, “This could be their last tournament together and hopefully that performance against the Olympic champions will give them the extra confidence and motivation to go far in the competition.”
In the first game of the match, Wee Kiong and Yao Han played at their maximum speed and controlled the game at the net. They never let their opponents to dominate the rallies at the net, as both Malaysians were quicker in taking the bird from the tape of
the net. They grabbed the opening game with the margin of 21-17.
In the second game, the spirited Malaysians silenced the Indonesian crowd by playing killing badminton as they showed no mercy to the experienced challengers and claimed the second game with a big margin of 21-13.
Wee Kiong and Yao Han won the battle by a 21-17 and 21-13 score on the board.
In the quarter-final, Wee Kiong and Yao Han are set to play against another Indonesian pair of Yohanes Rendy Sugiarto and Afiat Yuris Wirawan.
