Tan Wee Kiong makes the cut to become a part of national team for Thomas Cup Finals
Malaysia’s emerging young player Tan Wee Kiong proved his worth and made the cut as he remained successful in securing his place in the national team for Thomas Cup Finals 2012, starting from May 20 at Wuhan China.
Wee Kiong failed to become a part of national squad for the qualifying round of Thomas cup in February as he was not in his prime form at that time.
However, he struggled really hard in training sessions in the last couple of months and showed his commitment to become a part of the team for Thomas Cup Finals.
He showed his impressive skills in the recent Badminton Asia Championships and managed to grab the attention of coaches in the national squad.
The Doubles coach Tan Kim Her appreciated the elevated performance of Wee Kiong and also praised for the improvement he made in these couple of months.
Kim Her said that Wee Kiong and Hoon Thien How will be a part of national squad in Thomas Cup Finals as they are a good combination.
He said, “Wee Kiong took it hard after failing to make the squad for the qualifiers but he managed to overcome his disappointment and continued to work hard. I had told him he had the chance to make the final squad if he kept progressing and was disciplined
in training and he has earned his place on merit.”
The coach also said that another Doubles player Thien How can also compete with Tan Boon Heong if situation required.
He added, “Thien How was already in as he is versatile. He and Wee Kiong are a good combination while Thien How can also forge a strong partnership with Boon Heong if needed.”
The in-form Wee Kiong is expected to continue performing well and becoming a part of national team for Thomas Cup will help him to get a firsthand experience to face the pressure of a team-event tournament.
However, the current Malaysian team is weakest in the history of Thomas Cup but still there are enough players to spoil the party of any top team in the world.
