Tanda ending 15 months long  win drought in the Rancho Bernardo Handicap at Del Mar
Tommy Hutton’s Dream Stable owned Tanda had a new look about her with the new jockey, Victor Espinoza, and a new trainer, Mike Mitchell. The new trio proved to be a winning combination as the 4-year-old filly won a race after 15 months, as the Grade 3 $147,000
Rancho Bernardo Handicap ended the long drought for Tanda.
Among the older female sprinters, Tanda looked in good shape throughout the race and always looked like a winner. Under jockey Victor Espinoza, Tanda left Irish Gypsy in her strong run in the stretch and also the pace maker Mildly Offensive to win the race
by 1 ¼ lengths.
Six-year-old bay filly, She’s Cheeky under jockey Joe Talamo drifted on the inside and under strong urging from her jockey pulled out her final long strides to belatedly finish before Irish Gypsy for second money.
Originally a race of seven contestants, cut down to four with 3 morning scratches. The race didn’t start well for the pace setter Mildly Offensive, as she stumbled at the start, but the filly managed to pull herself together and went on to take an early
lead.
Meanwhile, Tanda and Irish Gypsy prompted the pace and made quick fractions going past the opening quarter mile and the half mile markers. Coming in to the mid stretch, Tanda decided to take control of things as she smoothly glided up wide and led the 4
filly field by 2 ½ lengths.
The late runner, She’s Cheeky, followed Tanda’s footsteps and made her move in the final furlong. The second best filly made a late run to overcome Mildly Offensive and Irish Gypsy.
Prior to the Rancho Bernardo Handicap, Irish Gypsy defeated Tanda by 1 ¼ lengths in the Grade 2 A Gleam Handicap on Synthetic surface at Hollywood Park on 16 July, 2011, over a distance of 7 furlongs.
Irish Gypsy rider, Joe Talamo was impressed by Tanda’s morning work she he was all praise about the filly. He said it was alright for her to see us going past her and then making up the distance to win the race, these ones are a pleasure to ride.
