  1. Most bike shops will be able to set you up with a tandem. Cost can vary tremendously. Entry level would be around $800 aussie dollars for a basic new machine. The sky is the limit for the top end.

This is only a seven speed but it is reasonable quality and can be upgraded.

I quite like my tandem and often ride it solo. When you realise that they are designed to carry the weight of two people it makes it a very useful workhorse. I've even thought seriously about fitting a ute style tray instead of the rear seat.

I'd like to wear one of those t-shirts that say, "If you can read this then the b*tch fell off", but my wife doesn't approve.

If the beloved is a somewhat slower rider than you, then a tandem will mean an end to the endless waiting for her to catch up. Yes that makes riding a lot more fun and enjoyable. You will find they are quick too. Along the flat and down hill expect to pick up quite a few km/h. Going uphill they are generally only a touch quicker than the weakest rider would be on there own. Usually one rider is a bit weak so tandems have this poor reputation for climbing which is unfounded.

Be aware that if two blokes ride a tandem together everybody assumes they are g*y. Two good riders on a tandem are awesome. These things can really get along.

Most people can jump on a tandem and be sorted within a few minutes. The only thing that is a bit tricky is climbing out of the saddle, but this comes with experience.

Yeah mate, if you have a partner to ride with, then tandems are great. Even if you don’t, they are still fun. Who knows, riding one around solo at least gives you the opportunity to pick up.

    Have fun
