Question:

Tangled thread?

Okay, so I have a Brother machine and although it has always sewn straight even stitches for me before, now that I'm working on home decorator jaquard and heavy thread, the stitches are all messed up.

They are even and straight on the top of the fabric, but underneath, the stitches are all tangled up look horrible! When I pick it out, it seems to be the needle thread that is tangled, not the bobbin thread. What is wrong? Is my tension wrong? I've tried a couple different ones, or is it the bobbin tension? Or is it my needle? Please help!

  1. I have sewn drapes for all the windows in my house, using several different fabrics. You do not need heavy duty thread to sew home decor Jacquard. Actually don't use heavy thread, Use regular thread. Use good thread, Gutermann or Sulky. Wind you bobbin with the same thread at an even pace. Re thread everything, use a new needle and you should be fine.

  2. It's probably a matter of the tensions (and maybe the needle, too).  Essentially, your bobbin thread is not engaging. The top and bobbin tension need to be similar, or this will keep on happening.

The thread weight, top and bobbin, have to match, too.

First, note exactly what the tension setting is, so you can put it back that way. Then experiment on scraps. Sometimes more pressure on the presser foot helps, too.

I'm finding many other complaints about Brother machines doing this more than other brands, FWIW.

  3. Try changing the needle to a heavier weight, like leather or upholstery needle.  As the previous person said, make sure the top and bottom thread are the same weight.  Check and adjust your tension as needed.  You can also wind the threads around the fingers of your left hand and give it a little extra pressure as you feed the fabric through.  See if that helps.   Good luck!

  4. you should check to see if you bobbin is in the bobbin carrier the right way.  You may have it in backwards.
