I've got a tank of tiger barbs, which are known to be fin-nippers. What kind of scavenger fish can I add to this tank to clean up the bottom? It's a ten-gallon tank.

  1. Plecostomus, pleco, algae eater, or algae sucker, is a general name for a type of freshwater tropical Central and South American fish belonging to the family Loricariidae. Algae eaters are extremely popular in aquaria for their ability to clean tanks by eating algae growth... They live a long time too... Good luck...

  2. Try ghost shrimp.  They're ten cents each, so you can buy 'em and see if they work for you.

Ghost shrimp scavenge along the bottom and will eat your extra fishfood.  They grow to be about an inch long, so the barbs might or might not eat them, but I buy a dozen for a dollar, so if some of them get eaten it's okay.  They're on sale online and at your local fish store.  I recommend buying them at your local fish store (or even walmart) because they're a bit pricey online.  But here's some good information on them:  http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_...

  3. algae eaters all i know i hope this helps. I have one and it does a great job taking care of the algae.

  4. My barb tank has Nanus Cory and otocinclus. There's 5 Tigers in that tank and they don't bother either species.

  5. Corydoras and many types of shrimp are great for cleaning your tank. I'm just not sure if they can go with your tiger barbs.

If you want an algae eater, don't get any of them besides otos. The rest of them grow really huge.
