Question:

Tank mates and how big of a tank for a butterfly koi?

Ok, I have a butterfly koi. I've had him for about a year or better now. He's between 6 and 7 inches long, very healthy looking.

I want to know what are good tank mates for a fish this size, and how big of a tank should I upgrade to next?

He's in an 18 gallon right now, but that until I get the next bigger tank, I want one big enough that he won't outgrow in a few months, I'd like at least a year's use out of it if possible. Thanks.

  1. to make it nicer add another butterfly koi rather than other type of fish.

a 100 gallon would be much better however the bigger  the better.

even how big your pond indoors growth slows down indoors.

    kOi keeper and goldfish keeper.

  2. you should get a 30 gallon that should be big enough

    good luck

  3. I agree with Catcat.  I can't even believe that you would put a Koi in an 18 gal. tank.  The fish needs to be in a pond, so I wouldn't worry about getting any more fish, right now.  Just rehome this one to a proper environement.  I have quite a few Koi, myself, but they are in a 16,000 gal. pond. not a soup bowl.

  4. He should be at least 12" long by now. That tank has stunted his growth already. Koi are not tank fish, they are STRICTLY pond fish, and 1000 gallons minimum at that. To be even considered in a tank you need 250-500 gallons heavily over filtered.

That tank has already caused stunting and anything less than a filtered koi pond will cause health problems and water quality issues.

  5. 30 gallons will be nice

you can use many more fishes

    and interior designing

    and lights

u'r fish tank very big and very good

    pimped your fish tank

  6. koi should not be kept in a tank, they are for ponds and the such, he will never get to be as big and beautiful as he should in a tank.

  7. All community fish unless your community fish are in the same size.
