Tanner Gudauskas and Jay Quinn triumphant in Round 2 of Quiksilver Pro Portugal 2011
The 9th and 10th heat of Quiksilver Pro Portugal’s round of 48 (Round 2) went down at the beach-break of Ribeira D’Ilhas in Ericeira, Portugal, on Wednesday afternoon, June 15th.
America’s Tanner Gudauskas prevailed in the ninth heat to confirm his place in the next round. Northern Spain’s Hodei Collazo had no reason to feel disappointed either as he clinched the second place to remain in title contention. Guadeloupe’s Charles Martin
and Australia’s Stu Kennedy finished third and fourth respectively, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.
The 10th heat featured a complete domination by New Zealand’s Jay Quinn. Australia’s Davey Cathels managed to remain alive in the competition by grabbing the second position, while Brazil’s Heitor Alves and France’s Maxime Huscenot got eliminated
after finishing third and fourth respectively.
Despite the low tides at the primary event site, Gudauskas managed to come up with an impressive set of scores to walk away with top honours in the ninth heat. Almost half-way through the heat, he locked a wave to throw down a string of impressive turns
and flips, earning 8.17 points for the wonderful effort. Adding an additional 6.00 to his score, Gudauskas finished with a heat-total of 14.17 points. The score carried him off to a convincing victory eventually.
Though Collazo was unable to keep the American from taking the win, he did manage to earn score to secure the runner-up position to successfully make it to the next round. He collected a 6.27 off his first good wave and followed it up late in the heat with
a 6.70-point wave.
Martin’s heat-total of 12.30 and Kennedy’s 12.26 earned them third and fourth positions, bring their competition to a premature end.
The next heat turned out to be a one-man show, with Quinn clinching the win without really breaking a sweat. Asserting his excellent form, he utilised the very first wave that he caught to execute a combination of sensational manoeuvres to earn a near-perfect
score of 9.40. Adding an additional 6.90 points to his account, he finished with a two-wave total of 16.30 points. The score proved to be too much for his competition to beat, eventually forcing them to surrender victory.
Cathels scored 6.67 and 6.60 off his two waves to finish with a heat-total of 13.27 points, grabbing the honour of being the second best surfer during the heat and qualifying to the next round.
Apparently failing to read the surfing conditions properly, Alves scored 10.26 points overall from his two best waves to take third position, while Huscenot finished at the bottom with a two-wave score of 9.67points. The disappointing performances by the
two athletes removed them from the event title contention.
