Tanner Hendrickson and Vincent Duvignac prevail in Round 2 of the Reef Hawaiian Pro
The exhilarating surfing action continued at the famed North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, on Tuesday, November 22, as Hawaii’s Tanner Hendrickson took on his countryman Torrey Meister, America’s Dane Reynolds and New Zealand’s Billy Stairmand in the 11th
heat, whereas France’s Vincent Duvignac squared off with his compatriot Romain Cloitre, Hawaii’s TJ Barron and Puerto Rico’s Dylan Graves in the 12th heat of the Reef Hawaiian’s Pro’s Round of 96 (Round 2).
The 11th heat saw Hendrickson clinch a convincing victory to confidently make his way into the Round of 64 (Round 3), while Meister grabbed the runner-up place to remain alive in the contention for the event title. Reynolds and Stairmand rounded
out the third and fourth position respectively, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.
Duvignac emerged triumphant in the 12th heat to advance through into the next round, joined by Cloitre who finished in runner-up place. Barron and Graves failed to make the Round 3 cut after finishing in third and fourth positions respectively,
which resulted in their elimination from the competition.
The first round of Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, the Reef Hawaiian Pro, remained quite deprived of decent surfing conditions, which led the surfers to put in an extra effort while searching for competitive scores to extend their life in the event.
As the 11th heat kicked off, the crowd-favourite Hendrickson did extremely well to adjust to the demanding surfing conditions and selected a couple of relatively juicy waves to unload a flurry of exquisite tricks, posting a 6.67 and 7.33 on the
score-board to finish with a heat-total of 14.00 points. The score turned out to be a decisive one and carried him off to victory.
Meister put up a decent performance and managed to collect a 4.50 and 5.70 off his two top waves to get to a heat-total of 10.20 points. The result was enough to keep him alive in the competition by sending him into the next round.
Reynolds was involved in the first upset of the day as he failed to come up with a decent performance and finished in third place with a heat-total of 8.90 points. A disappointing performance by Stairmand led to his ejection from the competition after finishing
with a heat-total of 5.00 points.
The 12th heat turned out to be pretty intense as all four surfers struggled to find good scores. After a determined search, the 23-year-old Duvignac scored 10.67 points in total off his top-two waves, which included a 6.17 and 4.50-point wave.
The score served to seal the fate of the battle in his favour.
Cloitre rounded out the runner-up place after scoring a 6.23 off his first business wave and following it up with a 3.60-point wave in the final minutes of the battle to finish with a heat-total of 9.83 points.
Barron finished in third place with a heat-total of 8.20 points, while Graves finished last with a two-wave total of 6.06 points. The lacklustre performance by the two surfers led to their elimination from the competition.
