Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk claims a quarter-final spot in 2012 Syed Modi International India GPG
Thailand’s Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk continued his unbeatable run in Men’s Singles event of Syed Modi International India GPG and surged into the quarter-final round on December 20, 2012.
He was up against Park Sung Min of Korea in third round of this GP Gold event and locked the honour by registering a favourable result of 21-11, 19-21 and 21-15.
The Thai campaigner ruled the court in opening and ending sets whereas the opposing shuttler could show his brilliance only in the second game.
Tanongsak, who was placed at 14th spot in the tournament ranking, launched a brisk attack and gained an early advantage in first set of the match.
He played with great control in the establishing rallies and kept his competitor at the lower end. His strategy was so complete that the Korean player could not find even a single loophole.
He was enjoying an upper hand with a respectable score of 11 when his challenger made a swift progress and narrowed the gap before interval.
However, Tanongsak did not lose nerves and reinstated his dominance immediately after the mid-game break. He did not lose this pace and cruised to victory with a convincing margin of 21-11.
The following game completely changed the scenario as Sung Min showed a transformed character and turned his rival’s plan of straight-set victory into dust.
This time he employed interesting tactics and ruled the court throughout this crucial game. At first, he pushed his higher ranked competitor on back foot by unleashing a series of power packed smashes and then confounded him with masterly crafted drop net
shots.
The Korean player maintained a significant difference on the points table until last shot was played and won this set with 21-19 score.
Third set subjected both contenders to a tough trial as they were just one step away either from the quarter-finals or a woeful exit. They put all they had to claim this final match point and made this a memorable contest.
Finally, this cliff-hanging tussle ended when the Thai player placed an overwhelming figure of 21-15.
Now Tanongsak will meet Srikanth K in the round of eight of 2012 Syed Modi International India GPG.
