Tao Zheng wins Men’s 100m backstroke gold – 2012 Paralympic Games
Tao Zheng of China won gold medal of Men’s 100m backstroke race in S6 category on initial day of the swimming events at the 2012 London Paralympic Games in Aquatics Centre on Thursday, August 30.
The 21-year-old Zheng met expectations of his supporters by clinching gold medal of the opening event of the tournament. He continued his nerve-wrecking pace throughout the event and hit the finishing blockade for gold medal.
With his continuous efforts, Zheng stayed in a body length lead over his strongest challenger and made his way to the finishing blockade in an improved world record timing of 1 minute and 13.56 seconds.
His title claiming effort remained 1.08 seconds ahead of his teammate, Hongguang Jia, who transpired on the finishing end as second fastest swimmer by producing a time of 1 minute and 14.64 seconds.
The second position holder was followed by Sebastian Iwanow of Germany, who remained one and a half body length behind and completed the podium by winning bronze medal of the event by submitting a time of 1 minute and 15.95 seconds.
The German swimmer was chased by Iaroslav Semenenko of Ukraine, who stayed just 0.03 seconds slower from his former finisher and settled on the wall as fourth fastest swimmer by reporting a time of 1 minute and 15.98 seconds.
Fifth fastest spot of the race was obtained by Matthew Haanappel of Australia, who stayed nearly five seconds apart and tapped the wall with an effort of 1 minute and 21.25 seconds.
The Australian swimmer was followed by Swen Michaelis of Germany, who remained 2.29 seconds slower and clocked a time of 1 minute and 23.54 seconds for sixth position.
Michaelis was chased by Jawad Kadhim Joudah Joudah of Iraq, who occupied seventh position of the event by posting a time of 1 minute and 25.31 seconds.
Eighth position of the race was secured by Aaron Rhind of Australia, who stayed nearly four seconds behind and hit the wall with a timing of 1 minute and 29.28 seconds.
Zheng was extremely delighted with his title claiming effort and collected medal after the session.
