I have a Tappan Gas Oven. It will not heat up now. Over the last few months, I saw the problem coming. The oven would not kick on. If I open and slammed the door a few times the gas would startflowing and it would kick on and start heating and cook the rest of the time finee. Now no matter what I do it will not kick on. lit but nothing else happens.

  1. sounds like some kind of valve problem. As if there is something in one of the gas valves that is sticking that used to be fixed by slamming the door. try turning off the gas and look around at the valves in the oven. are there any safety shut-off valves in there? could they be sticking?

  2. It could be your thermostat is dirty or malfunctioning, you could have a blockage in your gas line--unlikely if you have a pilot light, your gas valve could be part shut.  Check the valve in your gas line to make certain it hasn't gotten partially shut.  Do your burners light, or are they affected too?  If only your oven is affected, it's probably your thermostat.  If the whole stove is affected, then it may be a leak or blocked gas line.  Call your supplier.  They can check most of the problems up to the valve, then you can take a chance and do it yourself or get a repair person.  Good luck.

  3. Is it designed so the heat turns off when the door is open?

If so, sounds like possibly a faulty door switch, which should be fairly easy to locate - like a pin sticking out.

If not, could be igniter worn out.

If you are handy try looking the schematic which is somewhere mounted to the frame of the oven unless someone removed it.  Good luck.

  4. Sounds as if the valve is sticking. At the bottom of the unit toward the back you will see the valve, a rectangular valve less than 6" long. The burner will be sitting on top of it.

With the thermostat on and calling for heat, use a small wrench and tap the valve. If it comes on, the valve is sticking.

From what you have said it sounds as if this is the problem from the beginning and you will wind up replacing it.
