Tar Heel Mom won by a huge margin over a speedy lot in the Honorable Miss Handicap for trainer Stanley Hough
The six-year-old mare, Tar Heel Mom, dropped a bomb at the Grade 2 $150,000 Honorable Miss Handicap at Saratoga on 7 August, 2011, when she rolled in for a massive 5 ¾ length victory to win the Saratoga handicap fixture.
The Alex Rankin owned Tar Heel Mom, added another Grade 2 win to her multiple stakes winning illustrious career for trainer Stanley Hough.
Last two outings at the Delaware Park and the Parx Racing were partially disappointing for the mare as she fell short off the mark each time to finish second on both occasions.
If it was a win her connections were looking for then a trip back to arguably her favourtie racecourse, Saratoga, did the trick for her and got her back into the winning circle.
The Honorable Miss, run over at a distance of six furlongs was loaded with speed, and the daughter of Flatter showed that she can out run a speedy contingent at her top speed, any given day.
She proved to be quicker than the rest, and under jockey Alex O. Solis, the pair bolted through the gates ripping the track apart, and took the lead as quickly as the quarter pole mark and after that kept increasing the pace to hit the wire in 1 minute and
10.42 seconds.
Ridden by Miguel Mena, the 4-year-old bay filly Beat the Blues tracked Tar Heel Mom from the word go, and her persistence from the outset earned her a second place finish in the race, 1 ¾ lengths clear of the 4-year-old bay filly Champagne d’ Oro.
The Eric Guillot trained Champagne d’ Oro, who won the Test Stakes last year in 2010, finished third behind Beat the Blues. The two fillies Wild News and Irish Gypsy, who tried to tackle the fast pace Tar Heel Mom in the early stages of the race, completed
the order of finish.
Tar Heel Mom has an impressive record at Saratoga with 3 wins out of 4, and her overall wins increased to 11 from 28 starts with the lifetime earnings of $778,392.
