Tara Pacheco and Berta Betanzos lead 470 Women fleet at 2011 Perth ISAF Sailing World Championship
Racing of 470 Women fleet was held on a windward, leeward course at Bather’s Bay under a blue sky with winds that gusted up to 18 knots. Spain’s Tara Pacheco and Berta Betanzos did not put up a superb sailing show on 14th day but still they are
on the leading spot with 31 points after both races of the day at the 2011 Perth ISAF Sailing World Championships.
The 470 Women fleet raced on Centre Course where with a bullet and a second place, Brazil’s Martine Grael and Isabel Swan dominated the fleet and moved their team up in the overall standings. The Brazilian pair is now on eighth place with 71 points.
Japan’s Yuka Yoshisako and Nariko Okuma along with Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie of New Zealand finished closely behind the Brazilians in seventh race. Race 8 results featured new faces at the front, as Italy’s Giulia Conti and Giovanna Micol dominated the race
along with Grael and Swan on second place.
On third podium were 2011 470 European Champions, Henriette Koch and Lene Sommer of Denmark. Despite the impressive performance on 14th day, the Brazilians could not even come close to the Spanish duo which had a low score, a 27 and seven in both
races.
Speaking to the media, Betanzos said, “You cannot get cross. You have to continue with your mind relaxed and try to do your best. It was quite hard, because the wind was so shifty and going up and down quite a lot. In the first race we took a wrong decision
at a really important moment. We should not have tacked after the start as we then had to sail from the mid-fleet.”
