Taranaki beat Southland 15-12 in 12th round of ITM Cup - Rugby news
Taranaki dumped Southland by 15-12 in a nail biting contest during the 12th round of the ongoing ITM Cup, which was played in Invercargill on August 24. The defeat has also snatched the Ranfurly Shield from Southland. The match went at a snail’s
pace as both the sides failed to put some energy into the game. The sluggish play led to a low scoring conclusion of the game but it was enough for Taranaki to celebrate a much needed victory. Beauden Barrett was exceptionally good with his boots and landed
with five penalties in the Southland goals.
It was Southland that took an early lead in the match with a three-pointer. James Wilson put his side on the board with a well executed penalty during the early few minutes of the first-half. Southland was leading the game with 6-0 after play of 20 minutes
and at that moment things looked good for them.
Taranaki responded very late in the match as Brett scored the first three pointer during the 25th minute of the game and later on he helped his side with four more to complete the victory. The whole match revolved round two players: Brett for
Taranaki and Wilson for Southland.
In the end the battle was won by Beauden Barrett who kicked five penalty goals for Taranaki. Meanwhile, Wilson scored nine points for his side with the help of three penalty shot for Southland.
