the smaller wasp you refer to is a Tarantula Wasp and it actually stings the tarantula when it raises it's legs in the air exposing it's underbelly.  the poison paralyzes the spider and then the wasp lays it's egg on the spider.  so technically the wasp doesn't kill the spider, it only paralyzes it.  it's the larva after the egg hatches that kills the spider slowly over 30 days or so...
