I know the pediatrician will always say its best to get the shots.

but alot of people say that could cause autism.

i have worked with autistic children a longtime.

I now have a baby subject to these multible immunizations. what do you think personally based on your experiences is the best way to go?

  1. Honestly, I wouldn't listen to anyone here including myself, none of us are professionals on either subject..I would do my own research on the subject. Review what was the outcome of all the studies that have been done with the relation of the MMR shot and autism and decide for yourself what is in the best interest of your child. But here's my 2 cents worth anyways ;)

I have child with autism who was diagnosed with autism before his MMR shot, he has had the shot since and his characteristics have not worsen. He has 2 older brothers who have received the shots as well, and do not have autism or any other type of disability. Autism is 4 times more likely in boys than girls.

Children are born with autism or the potential to develop it. I really think we have to look at the whole picture here. No one can say 100% for sure what causes autism. In some cases it may be genetic; it may be enviromental; it may be the MMR shot; it may be pregnancy complications; but autism in children is not caused by the same thing in each child, if it was than we would know 100% for sure what the cause was. Each child is an individual and each case of autism is different.

Think about all the people in the world who have received the MMR shot, exactly what percent of these people have been diagnosed with autism due to the shot? The risks are much greater for child not to receive the shot than to receive it. Would you rather your child get the shot and have a chance of getting autism or would you rather not get the shot and have your child have a chance of catching one of the diseases the shot prevents and possibly die from it? There has recently been an increase in Measle outbreaks in the UK and Germany..why? because of parents not giving the MMR shot to their kids. It's only a matter a time before we see an increase in measle outbreaks in the US as well due to parents not getting the child vaccinated.

They have been doing studies about the MMR vaccine and autism for about 10 years now, if there was such a risk of autism developing I think something would of been done long before now.

  2. My son didnt show sign until he got them either he has NOT has his K shots yet. The MMR is the one that is "suppose" to be dangerous. I would find a dr that is willing to spread out the shot further aprt then what they are or even wait on the MMR. I cant remember the last case of measles around here? My son nurse gave him at 12 mth his 12 and 18 mth shots all at once when i asked why so many she said that way he wont have to come back so soon. Im sorry I was uneducated about the shots. Find a good dr that will listen to you,, my ped doesnt but I have a friend who is into herbal healing stuff and hers went through the listing of Vac with her and told her maybe one is ness I think that was Hep?

  3. I personally do not believe the shots are the cause of autism.  My son showed signs of autism nearly from birth, although we did not (and many parents don't) realize that was what was going on until later.  As an advocate, I encourage parents to vaccinate their child.  Autism is difficult but not fatal...many of the diseases these shots protect against can be fatal and/or have serious long term affects on health on mental development.  We have seen this with diseases like polio.  Polio was thought to be completely eradicated so many parents dropped that particular vaccination.  However, while it has basically vanished in the states, in our global culture that does not mean we will not be exsposed from another location.  Polio has begun to reappear in the states, in new and previously unknown strains that have proven more difficult to treat.  Vaccinations save lives..not only your child's but the lives of other children as well.

  4. Well my son really didnt show signs until he had his shots. But it made him unique and I wouldnt want him any other way. I think the benefits of the shots totally outweigh the autism. Not everyone involved with autism look at it as a negative thing. Just my opinion.

  5. Child immunization can be very scary for parents, and many will often question their doctor about the pros and cons of having our children vaccinated.

While vaccinations have seriously reduced incidences of Whooping cough, Diphtheria, Measles, Mumps and Rubella (German measles), there has been some concern about the MMR (Measles, Mumps & Rubella)  triple vaccination, causing Autism, IBD Inflammatory Bowl Disease and ADHD/ADD.

Studies are still being done to prove or disprove the theory, there was a study done in UK suggesting a possible link by a Dr Wakefield, between Autism & IBD and the MMR vaccine. Dr Wakefield eventually retracted his original findings/

I am not all that convinced, my daughter has ADHD & ODD, due to her having a fairly significant reaction to one vaccine, as a toddler, we choose not to have her Rubella vaccination as a teenager, with the support of her Paediatrician.

But sadly  watching a child with whooping cough or having to work with a child who is left profoundly disabled due to measles, is equally sad.

I had a client who mother was convinced their child became Autistic after the MMR vaccination, and another who's child was left profoundly disabled because of not being vaccinated.

Please keep in mind that children who are not vaccinated will be excluded from kindergarten and school if their is an out break of Measles, Mumps and Rubella etc. Also schools ask for a certificate of vaccinations, some schools will not accept children who are not vaccinated, I think this is unfair, however I do understand why.

I hope they continue to do research in to the possible causes of Autism, including a link into vaccinations.

Please speak to your doctor and ask him/her about what is the best thing to do, I have also included a few links which may give a little more information.

    Good luck

  6. I don't believe that shots cause autism.  My son has had all his shots, and I wouldn't hesitate to do it with another child.

  7. Perhaps the shots are the cause, but then why aren't we all autistic? Because some  people don't have a certain enzyme  in their body to break down the chemicals in the shots? Doctors just assume babies are born healthy and when parents. mostly the mother. states a concern, doctors say"the child will out- grow it" and never really LISTEN to the mother when she feels in her gut something is wrong.  Can you ask the doctor not to give your baby "all" the shots at once, instead ask for MMR (measles, Mumps and Rube la)to be given separate...

Everyone I know is  immunized. I knew only one autistic child growing up, I know more now b/c I work in that area. There are more autistic kids in Michigan than any other state. There is no "test" for autism yet most doctors are diagnosing children and labeling them autistic. Children can become productive with lots of help and intervention early in childhood. The problem? if your child is diagnosed with autism more than likely your insurance will not cover any"help"
