  1. "Whiskey is correct, passports are NOT needed for LAND travel to and from Mexico until 2009.  See site below for verification.


  2. If you don't have a passport, you have to show an American birth certificate and photo ID (such as your driver's license.)  If you don't have those, expect to pull aside and spend some time with the immigration agents.

    And I second the advice on the Mexican auto insurance. Proof of Mexican insurance is required by law there.  If you don't have it, you will be jailed and your car impounded, no way around it.

  3. ACTUALLY YOU DO NEED TO HAVE ONE. THEY ARE STARTING TO ENFORCE IT.

  4. Not if you go by car, that law doesn't go into effect until 2009. I recommend you get temporary auto insurance. They drive like maniacs down there.
