Task bar won't show open windows and other open application why is this so?

I have searched and searched for the way to show open browsers and applications on the task bar and can not please help.

  1. have you tried restarting explorer? call up task manager(Ctrl+shift+esc), in the processes tab look for explorer.exe, terminate it, then file>new task and type in explorer.that should fix it.
