Tasmania and Queensland move ahead in U-21 Australian National Hockey Championship (Men)
Tasmania cruised past New South Wales (NSW) by 3-1, while Queensland thrashed Northern Territory (NT) by 4-0, in their respective Day-7 games and moved into the next round of the U-21 Australian National Hockey Championship being held at the Perth
Hockey Stadium.
The match between Tasmania and New South Wales was the third fixture of the day where the former one score three goals in the seventy minutes of play against the single of their rivals.
The Tasmanians began the game with high spirit and accomplished to and fro strikes against NSW squad. On the other side, it seemed that the players from NSW had been tired after a long way. Their defence as well the offence was not in proper action.
With seven minutes into the match, Kurt Mackey made a lengthy run towards the downfield and unleashed a powerful shot into the goal. Though it was blocked by the either side, but the effort awarded a short-corner to Tasmanian side. Dougal Middleton,
however, failed to avail the maiden chance of the game.
The NSW strikers severally attacked the defence line of Tasmania, but to no avail. In the 16th minute of the match, Dougal Middleton converted a short-corner and put Tasmanians in the front. The game moved forward with same
score and speed, until the second last minute of the first half. Adam Miller scored a goal from the field and expanded the lead before going into the second.
The action between Tasmania and NSW resumed with both the teams struggling to take lead in the game. However, it was NSW that opened the scoring of the second half through a field goal in the hands of Joshua Walters in the 46thminute. However,
it was the only goal from them in the two halves.
Chris Metcalf of Tasmania scored another goal in the 50th minute, which was the final from the two sides and NSW lost the game at 1-3.
In the final match of the day, Queensland whitewashed Northern Territory by four goals and upgraded its position at the point-chart. The game started with both teams accomplishing attacks against each other.
In the 6th minute, the NT side earned a short-corner, but failed to avail the opportunity. In the later time, it also received a number of chances, but to no avail.
From the other side, Jacob Webber converted a penalty-corner in the 20thminute, while his team-mate, Matt Gohdes, added a score through a penalty-stroke. In the 27th minute, Ethan Quan converted a short-corner for
Queensland and further increased the advantage. Daniel Beale added another goal in the waning minutes and sealed the victory at 4-0. Unluckily, the NT team failed to score a goal in the two rounds.
