Tasmania in dominant position against Western Australia in Sheffield Shield
Tasmania built up a healthy 251-run lead over http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Western-Australia-c865 (WA) at the close of the second day’s play of a Sheffield Shield match at the WACA in Perth.
The visitors started the final session of play on 276 runs for the loss of five wickets. A fine batting effort from Mark Cosgrove and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Luke-Butterworth-c1850 helped the team to reach 411 for eight at the close of play.
Butterworth and Cosgrove extended their sixth wicket partnership to over 100 runs and put their team in a very strong position. Cosgrove scored 86 runs off just 102 balls and struck 13 boundaries in his innings. He helped his team score runs quickly and
put WA on the back-foot.
The dismissal of Cosgrove, after a 119-run stand with Butterworth, brought Tom Triffitt to the crease. The wicketkeeper batsman provided good support to Butterworth and scored 16 runs for his team. He was out after putting together a 48-run partnership with
Butterworth, which helped Tasmania extend their lead to over 200 runs.
Xavier Doherty was the next wicket to fall after the left-arm spinner had scored 14 runs off 26 balls. The fall of wickets didn’t bother Butterworth at all and he kept on scoring runs at a decent pace. At the close of play, Butterworth was not-out on 91
with 10 boundaries to his name. He will be looking forward to getting some support from the tail-enders in the first session of the third day.
Ben Hilfenhaus stayed at the crease for 13 balls and was unbeaten on four runs. His role will be to stay at the crease for as long as possible in order to allow Butterworth to extend his team’s lead to over 300 runs. There are still two days of play remaining
in the match. Although the wicket is playing well, there is some support for the bowlers in it.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ryan-Duffield-c2387 and WA’s Captain Marcus North grabbed two wickets each for their team. They would have liked to get some wickets in the first session but the Tasmanian batsmen denied them any chances with their excellent batting.
However, the hosts will be looking forward to dry up the runs for Butterworth in the first hour of play on day three. The time consumed by Butterworth tomorrow will be crucial for both teams. On the other hand, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tasmania-c854 will be waiting for Butterworth to
complete his ton as soon as possible, so that they can declare and bowl out WA in their second innings.
